Gate Installation San Diego
Gate and fence installation built to hold the line for decades.
Shiro Builders Group installs gates and fencing throughout San Diego County, including wood privacy fences, vinyl fencing, ornamental iron and aluminum fencing, chain-link fencing, horizontal slat fencing, and composite panels, as well as swing gates, sliding gates, automatic driveway gates, side yard gates, and pool safety fencing. We handle property line verification, layout, permits where required, post setting, panel and gate fabrication or supply, hardware, automation, and final finish under one contract.
Gates and fencing planned around your property line, your privacy, and how you actually use the yard.
A fence is the first thing people see and the last thing most homeowners think about until it starts leaning. It sets the boundary, maintains the backyard’s privacy, keeps children and dogs where they belong, controls who walks up the driveway, and frames the front of the house from the street. When it fails, it fails visibly. Posts set too shallow begin to rack after a few wet winters. Untreated wood at grade rots from the bottom up. Gates that were hung without a proper post and diagonal brace start to sag within a season, drag on the concrete, and stop latching. None of that is a materials problem. It is almost always a layout and post problem, and post problems are not repairable later.
At Shiro Builders Group, gate and fence installation is treated as part of the construction scope rather than a panel delivery. That means confirming the property line and setback conditions before anything is dug, calling in utility locates on every job, setting posts to the depth and concrete volume the soil and fence height call for, spacing them for the actual panel system rather than a generic eight feet, and building gates on properly braced posts with hardware sized to the weight of the leaf. We supply and install across the full range of fence materials and gate types, or install owner-supplied panels and custom ironwork from a fabricator already selected. Either way, the structure underneath is built to the same standard, because that is the part nobody can see and nobody can fix cheaply.
We install gates and fencing across all of San Diego County, including Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, and Scripps Ranch; La Jolla, Solana Beach, Point Loma, and Coronado Island; Hillcrest, North Park, and South Park; La Mesa, El Cajon, Bonita, Spring Valley, and Santee; Chula Vista, National City, and Bonita; and Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Escondido, and San Marcos. Whether the project is a wood privacy fence replacement on a tract lot in Santee, an automatic driveway gate on a sloped approach in Scripps Ranch, or corrosion-resistant aluminum fencing on a coastal property in Point Loma, we bring the same layout work and the same post detailing to every run.

Popular gate and fence installation projects for San Diego homes.
San Diego lots are small, sloped, and close together, and most of the county’s fencing was installed with the original tract construction decades ago. That combination drives consistent demand for replacement fencing and new gates in every neighborhood we serve. These are the gate and fencing projects we complete most often, and what makes each one worth doing with the layout and structural care the application requires.
Wood Privacy Fence Installation and Replacement
Wood remains the most requested fencing material in San Diego, and a six-foot dog-ear or board-on-board privacy fence is still the default backyard boundary across Clairemont, La Mesa, Santee, El Cajon, Spring Valley, and Chula Vista. The difference between a wood fence that lasts eight years and one that lasts twenty-five is entirely in the details below the pickets. We set pressure-treated or steel posts in concrete footings sized for the fence height and soil conditions, keep the bottom rail and pickets clear of grade so water does not wick up into end grain, use hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners rather than plain steel, and cap the posts so the exposed end grain on top is protected. Board-on-board and horizontal slat layouts are available when a homeowner wants a more finished look than a standard dog-ear, and we can stain or seal the finished run as part of the same scope.
Vinyl and Composite Fencing
Vinyl fencing is the zero-maintenance answer for homeowners who are tired of restaining wood every few years, and it performs well in San Diego’s dry, sun-heavy climate when the right product is specified. Cheap vinyl chalks yellow and go brittle under constant UV exposure, so we specify panels with proper titanium dioxide UV inhibitors and internally reinforced rails on longer spans and gate sections. Composite fencing, built from the same wood-polymer blends used in composite decking, provides the visual texture of wood without the rot or need for repainting, and is a natural pairing when a composite deck is already part of the project. Both systems rely even more heavily on proper post setting than wood does, because the panels cannot absorb movement. Popular throughout Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Carlsbad, San Marcos, and Escondido.
Ornamental Iron and Aluminum Fencing
Ornamental metal fencing is the right answer when a property needs security and definition without sacrificing the view, which is why it shows up so often in front yards, canyon lots, and pool enclosures. Wrought iron offers the heaviest look and the widest range of custom fabrication, from simple pickets to scrollwork and custom panels, and can be powder-coated for a far longer finish life than paint. Powder-coated aluminum is the better specification near the coast, where salt air will find any break in an iron coating and start rust at the weld. For homes in La Jolla, Point Loma, Solana Beach, Coronado Island, Encinitas, and Oceanside, we generally recommend aluminum or galvanized and powder-coated steel with stainless hardware, and we detail every post base and weld with corrosion in mind rather than treating coastal exposure as an afterthought.
Automatic Driveway Gate Installation
An automatic driveway gate is the single highest-impact security and curb-appeal upgrade available at the front of a property, and it is also the project with the most potential for things to go wrong. Gate choice depends on the driveway itself. Swing gates need level, unobstructed swing clearance and become inoperable on an upward-sloping approach unless they are set back or built with rising hinges. Sliding and cantilever gates need clear side room along the fence line but handle slope and tight approaches far better. We assess the driveway grade, width, and clearance before specifying anything, then handle the structural gate posts, the gate itself, the operator, the safety photo eyes and reversing edges, the loop or exit sensors, the keypad or intercom, and the electrical and low voltage runs back to the house. Common across Scripps Ranch, Bonita, Escondido, San Marcos, Spring Valley, and the larger lots throughout East County.
Pool Safety Fencing and Code-Compliant Barriers
California requires an enclosure around residential swimming pools, and the requirements are specific about barrier height, the maximum gap below the barrier, the spacing of vertical members, the absence of climbable horizontal rails on the outside face, and gates that are self-closing and self-latching with the latch release placed out of a small child’s reach. Getting this wrong means a failed inspection at best. We install pool safety fencing in mesh, aluminum, iron, and glass panel systems, specify and install the self-closing and self-latching gate hardware the code calls for, and coordinate the barrier design with the pool deck, hardscape, and the rest of the backyard so it reads as part of the design rather than something bolted on afterward. Frequently installed alongside our pool and spa installations and backyard remodeling work across the county.
Gate Repair, Fence Repair, and Section Replacement
Not every fence needs to come down. When the posts are still sound and plumb, replacing rails, pickets, or a single damaged section is a far better investment than a full tear-out, and a sagging gate can usually be brought back into square by rebuilding the gate post, adding a proper diagonal brace or tension cable, and rehanging the leaf on hardware rated for its actual weight. We also rebuild gate posts that have loosened in their footings, replace failed hinges and latches, re-level runs after grading or root damage, and retrofit existing manual driveway gates with automation. What we do not do is hang a new gate on a post that cannot support it. We assess the run honestly and tell homeowners which sections are worth repairing and which are past it.

Retaining Walls
On San Diego’s sloped lots, the fence and the retaining wall are the same decision. Fencing that sits on top of a wall must be anchored into the wall structure rather than into loose backfill behind it, and that detail must be designed into the wall before it is poured or set, not drilled in afterward. Sequencing both scopes under one contract means the wall carries the fence loads correctly, the drainage behind the wall is not compromised by post footings, and the finished grade line works for both.
Landscaping
Fence lines and planting plans compete for the same few feet of a San Diego yard. Irrigation lines and sleeves need to be in the ground before post holes are dug, root barriers should be installed before a hedge goes in next to a new fence, and screening plants should be chosen around the finished fence height rather than against it. Shiro Builders Group coordinates fencing and landscaping as a single scope so the irrigation isn’t cut by a post hole and the planting plan actually works with the boundary you end up with.
Concrete Construction
Driveway gates, side yard gates, and fence runs all meet concrete somewhere. A new or widened driveway should be poured with the gate location, the operator pad, and the conduit sleeves for power and sensors already in place, because cutting those into finished concrete later is expensive and never looks right. Shiro Builders Group sequences concrete work and gate installation so that the slab, footings, and conduit are all set before the gate is hung. One contract, one schedule, one finished approach.

Gates & Fencing: Common Questions
How much does fence installation cost in San Diego?
Fence installation costs in San Diego depend on material, height, total linear footage, site access, and how much demolition and grading the run requires. As general ranges: chain link runs roughly $20 to $35 per linear foot installed; a standard six-foot wood privacy fence $35 to $60 per linear foot; board-on-board and horizontal slat wood $55 to $90; vinyl $40 to $75; composite $60 to $100; and ornamental aluminum or iron $45 to $120 depending on panel design and whether anything is custom fabricated. Slope, rock, limited equipment access, and the removal and disposal of an existing fence all add to the number. We measure the full run and provide a detailed, itemized estimate before any material is ordered.
How much does a driveway gate cost in San Diego?
A manual swing gate in ornamental iron or aluminum typically runs $3,000 to $8,000 installed depending on width, design, and post requirements. Adding automation generally adds $3,000 to $7,000 once the operator, safety photo eyes and reversing edge, exit sensor, keypad or intercom, and the electrical and low voltage runs are included. Sliding and cantilever gates cost more than swing gates of the same width because of the track, rollers, and heavier frame required, and custom-fabricated gates with solid panels or decorative ironwork are priced by design. Driveway width, approach slope, and the distance from the gate to the nearest power source are the three variables that most affect the price.
How long does fence installation take?
Most residential fence projects are completed in two to four days. Day one typically involves demolishing the existing fence and digging and setting posts; then the concrete footings need time to cure before any panels or gates are hung, which usually takes at least 24 hours, longer for larger posts or in cool weather. Panels, gates, and hardware follow, with staining or sealing afterward if in scope. Long runs, heavy slope, rock, and limited access extend the schedule. Automatic driveway gates usually add one to two days for the operator, sensors, and electrical, and may require an electrician’s rough-in earlier in the project.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in San Diego?
In most San Diego County jurisdictions, fences at or below six feet in the side and rear yard and at or below three feet in the required front yard setback do not need a building permit, though the exact limits, setback rules, and corner visibility triangle requirements vary by city and by zone. Permits are generally required for fences above those heights, for any fence that sits on top of or acts as part of a retaining wall, for pool barriers in many jurisdictions, and for work in the coastal zone, in a historic district, or on a property with an open space or brush management easement. Electrical work for an automatic gate operator is its own permit consideration. Shiro Builders Group assesses permit requirements for every gate and fencing project and handles applications in-house when required.
Who owns the fence between my property and my neighbor’s?
In California, a fence on the shared boundary line is generally the common responsibility of both adjoining owners, and state law presumes the cost of building and maintaining it is shared equally. The practical requirement is notice: an owner who intends to replace or substantially alter a shared boundary fence is expected to give the neighbor written notice in advance describing the problem, the proposed work, the estimated cost, and how the cost would be shared. That conversation goes much better with a written scope and a real estimate in hand, both of which are part of what our consultation produces. If a neighbor is not participating, the fence can usually still be built entirely on your own side of the line, and we will lay it out that way. We are contractors rather than attorneys, so for a genuine boundary dispute we would point you to a surveyor and a real estate attorney before we dig.
What is the best fence material for San Diego’s climate?
It depends far more on where the property sits than on preference. Near the coast, in La Jolla, Point Loma, Solana Beach, Coronado Island, Encinitas, Oceanside, and Carlsbad, salt air is the governing factor, and powder-coated aluminum, stainless or hot-dipped galvanized hardware, and vinyl all outperform untreated wood and plain steel by a wide margin. Inland, in El Cajon, Santee, Spring Valley, Escondido, and San Marcos, sun and heat are the problem, so UV-stabilized vinyl, composite, and properly sealed wood hold up best while cheap vinyl chalks and yellows within a few seasons. In brush management zones and anywhere near open space, non-combustible materials such as metal and masonry are strongly preferred and are sometimes required. We specify by location and exposure rather than by catalog.
Can you automate an existing driveway gate?
In many cases, yes. Retrofitting an operator onto a manual gate is a common project, and the deciding factors are whether the gate posts are structurally capable of carrying the additional load and the repeated cycling, whether the gate itself is square and swings or slides freely through its full travel without binding, and whether power can be reasonably run to the operator location. We also add the safety devices that current standards require, including photo eyes, reversing edges, and proper entrapment protection, which older manual gates were obviously never built with. If the existing posts are undersized or the gate is already sagging, we rebuild the posts and square the gate first, because an operator will destroy a marginal gate faster than daily hand use ever would.
Ready to replace that fence or add a gate?
Whether you’re replacing a leaning wood privacy fence across the whole back property line, putting corrosion-resistant aluminum fencing on a coastal lot, adding an automatic driveway gate with a keypad and intercom at the front of the house, bringing a pool enclosure up to code, or rebuilding a gate that stopped latching years ago, Shiro Builders Group handles layout, permits, post setting, installation, hardware, and automation under one roof across all of San Diego County. Let’s talk about what your property needs.
