Artificial grass and turf installed in the way you use your outdoor space.

At Shiro Builders Group, we treat artificial grass as a construction project, not a landscaping add-on. Whether an installation lasts 15 years or wrinkles in three comes down to the work done before the turf goes down: excavation depth, base compaction, drainage, and edging. Artificial Grass: Common Questions

Architectural blueprint and craftsmanship details
How much does artificial grass installation cost in San Diego?

Artificial grass installation costs in San Diego typically range from $12–$22 per square foot fully installed, depending on the turf product selected, the depth and type of base preparation required, site access conditions, and any edging or border work involved. A standard 500-square-foot front-yard lawn replacement typically costs $7,000–$14,000 installed. Larger backyard installations, pet-specific turf systems, elevated or rooftop installations, and projects requiring significant grading or drainage work are priced based on the specific scope. Turf removal rebate programs through SDCWA and local water agencies can offset a portion of the installation cost for qualifying projects. We provide detailed, itemized estimates before any work begins.

How long does artificial grass last in San Diego?

A quality artificial grass installation in San Diego should last 15–20 years under normal residential use. Product longevity depends on turf quality, infill maintenance, UV stabilization in the fiber, and the intensity of use the surface sees. Pet areas and high-traffic children's play surfaces wear out faster than decorative lawn areas, typically within 10–15 years, when the fibers show noticeable wear. San Diego's intense UV exposure is the primary driver of turf degradation in this market. We specify products with UV inhibitors designed specifically for Southern California sun exposure, not general-purpose turf sold equally across all climates.

Does artificial grass get hot in San Diego?

Yes, this is one of the most important considerations for artificial grass in San Diego's climate and one we address in product selection and infill specification on every project. Standard crumb rubber infill retains heat and can make turf surfaces uncomfortable to walk on barefoot in direct afternoon sun. We specify heat-mitigating infill options: silica sand, coated sand, and organic infill products that significantly reduce surface temperatures compared to rubber infill. Turf products with lighter-toned fiber colors also retain less heat than dark green products. For pool surrounds and play areas where barefoot use is common, we always recommend heat-reducing infill as standard practice rather than an upgrade.

Can I get a rebate for removing my natural lawn in San Diego?

Yes. SDCWA's WaterSmart Landscape Makeover program and many local water agencies, including Sweetwater Authority, Otay Water District, and the City of San Diego, offer turf-removal rebates for replacing natural lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping or approved alternatives, such as artificial grass. Rebate amounts and eligibility requirements vary by agency and change periodically. We're familiar with current rebate programs across San Diego County and can help you understand which programs apply to your property and how to document the installation for a qualifying rebate application.

How is artificial grass installed? What does the base preparation involve?

A quality artificial grass installation follows a specific sequence: existing lawn and vegetation is removed; the area is excavated to a depth of 3–4 inches; a compacted crushed aggregate base, typically class II road base, is installed and compacted to a minimum density; a weed barrier is laid over the compacted base; the turf is cut and fitted to the area with seams positioned to minimize visibility; the turf is secured at the perimeter with nails or staples into the base or with aluminum edging anchored to the border; and infill is distributed and brushed into the turf fibers. Projects with drainage challenges, significant grade changes, or elevated surfaces require additional drainage infrastructure below the base. Skipping or shortcutting any of these steps is the primary cause of premature turf installation failures. We don't cut corners on base prep because it determines everything about the installation's long-term performance.

Is artificial grass safe for pets and children?

Yes. When the right product and infill are specified for the use. Pet-specific turf products have higher drainage rates, perforated backing, and antimicrobial infill that effectively manage pet waste and maintain hygiene. Children's play surfaces use appropriate cushioning layers and non-toxic infill. We never install a standard decorative lawn product in a pet run or children's play area and represent it as fit for purpose: product and infill specifications are matched to the actual use of each surface on every project we install.
