A homeowner on Guizot St called Shiro Builders Group for a backyard remodel in San Diego. The family had a pool, fountain, turf, trees, and flower beds they loved. Still, the old patio near the fountain felt tight. Chairs could crowd the path when family or friends came over. They wanted a wider, safer place to relax while keeping what already felt like home.
Let’s see how the new patio gave the poolside area more space without taking away its character.
A Wider Patio Started With a Strong Base
We cleared the old surface and removed soil from the new patio area. String lines marked the shape and kept the layout straight.
Next, we prepared and leveled the base. Compacted stone gave the large-format patio pavers firm support and an even base.
Large Pavers Gave the Yard a Calm, Clean Look
We set light-toned pavers in a simple grid. The large tiles make the patio feel open, while straight joints keep it neat.
Cuts along the back edge helped the patio follow the curved wall. At the front, the new surface meets the older flagstone-style path and brick border. Both stay visible.
Key project features include:
- Large poolside patio with light-toned pavers
- Existing fountain kept as a focal point
- Curved edge shaped to the retaining wall
- White decorative rock along the outer edge
- Existing turf and stone paths kept in place
- Mature trees and planted beds preserved
The Fountain Stayed at the Heart of the Yard
For this home, the fountain did not need to go. We gave it more open space so it could remain a strong feature without crowding the seating area.
White decorative rock finishes the patio edge. It also helps the new hardscape blend with the existing landscaping and raised garden beds.

More Space Now Works for Real Days at Home
The new patio gives the family room for chairs, a small table, and easy movement. They can move between the pool, turf, garden, and stone paths with less crowding.
For homeowners planning landscape design in San Diego, this project shows how one key update can keep the yard’s best features.
A Poolside Space With More Comfort and Value
The finished patio gives the family safer footing, more room to sit, and a better link between the pool and garden. The cleaner layout adds curb appeal and may support home value. The fountain, trees, and beds still keep the yard familiar. The homeowner was happy with the refined look and added space.
